Part B:
Personal Awards

Part B deals with the qualifying conditions for the main personal awards –  

  1. ordinary pension (Rule B1)
  2. short service award (Rule B2)
  3. ill-health award (Rule B3)
  4. deferred pension (Rule B5)
  5. repayment of contributions (Rule B6).

Arrangements to commute or allocate a pension are covered in Rules B7 to B10.
 
The calculation of awards is covered by the appropriate part of Schedule 2.

Rule B11 deals with taxation.
 
Rule B12 explains that, when calculating certain benefits, account must be taken of pension sharing orders issued on divorce or dissolution of civil partnership.
 
Rule B13 directs that if any period of pensionable service relates to part-time service as a regular firefighter, certain awards should be calculated in accordance with Part VIA of Schedule 2.
 
Pages B Gen 1 and B Gen 2 at the end of this section of the Commentary explain certain standard deductions in respect of –

  1. elections for uprating service before 1 April 1972 to improve dependants’ benefits, and
  2. “modification” rules relating to the State pension scheme.

Rule B4 ("Injury Award") was deleted with effect from 1 April 2006 and the provisions transferred to the Firefighters' Compensation Scheme.
