This page is dedicated to the memory of the Firemen/Firefighters of those all brigades and services who lost their lives within the boundary of what is now South Yorkshire County
Dedication is also made to the numerous members of the service who have been seriously injured on duty or have suffered serious illness associated with their work as a firefighter.

John Pollard, age 41
Chief Constable, Responsible for Rotherham Fire Brigade
Died suddenly on 7th July 1888 from cardiac arrest whilst proceeding to a serious fire on High Street, Rotherham.
After giving instructions for the sounding of the alarm buzzer he proceeded to the High Street fire via Howard Street, Effingham Street, and on reaching College Yard he crossed near College Inn corner, where he was then seen by several witnesses to fall to the ground.
He was conveyed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. |

Archie Cornish, age 48
Police Inspector/Fire Officer, Sheffield Police Fire Brigade
Archie suffered severe burns on the 11th November, 1930, from a 'flash-over' fire caused by burning celluloid X-ray plates, in the basement of the Sheffield Royal Hospital, Sheffield.
He died as a result of his injuries on the 18th of February 1931.
Archie lived at Rockingham Street Fire Station Flats, Sheffield, with his wife Elizabeth and their 3 children: 9 year-old Peggy, 6-year old Archie, and 4 year-old Grace Marjorie. |

Fireman, Rotherham Auxiliary Fire Service
Charles of 4 Morley Street, Parkgate, Rawmarsh. Died 19th of August 1940, during an air raid on the British Oxygen Works on Armer Street, Rotherham. |

Norman Elliott, age 35
Water Department Turncock working with Sheffield Fire Brigade
Norman a Sheffield Water Company Turncock, lived at 62 Cockshutt Drive, Sheffield, with his wife Hilda and their one year-old son Geoffrey. He died on the night of 12th December 1940, on Union Street Sheffield, whilst working with the Sheffield Fire Brigade to ensure adequate supplies of firefighting water during the Sheffield Blitz. |

Fireman, Sheffield Auxiliary Fire Service
Stanley a Wood Turner and Hammer Finisher, lived at 84 Hermitage Street, Sheffield, with his wife Margaret. He died on Charles Street, Sheffield, whilst firefighting on the night of 12th December 1940 during the Sheffield Blitz. |

Frederick lived with his wife Edna at Flat 20/22, Rockingham Street Fire Station, Sheffield. He died on Charles Street, Sheffield, whilst firefighting on the night of 12th December 1940 during the Sheffield Blitz. |

Arthur a Clerk and Commercial Traveller lived at 7 Norwood Road, Sheffield. He died on Burgess Street, Sheffield, whilst firefighting on the night of 12th December 1940 during the Sheffield Blitz. |

Tom a Sheffield Transport Tram Conductor, lived at 90 Paper Mill Road, Shiregreen, Sheffield, with his wife Winifred. He died on the corner of Castle Street and Castle Green, Sheffield, whilst firefighting on the night of 12th December 1940 during the Sheffield Blitz. |

Alfred Garlick, age 30

Alfred a Bricklayer, lived at 7 Cockayne Place, Sheffield, with his wife Betsy. He was injured whilst Firefighting on Archer Road, Sheffield, on the night of 12th December 1940, during the Sheffield Blitz. He died of his injuries on December 14th 1940, at the Royal Hospital. |

Albert Wallace, age 30

Albert a Drop Forge Hot Press Operator, lived at 39 Fawley Road, Sheffield, the son of Florence Wallace of the same address. He died at the Marples Hotel, Fitzalan Square, Sheffield, on the night of 12th December 1940 during the Sheffield Blitz. |

Jack Hazard, age 41
Leading Fireman - Barnsley Division, National Fire Service
Jack died on 15th December 1941 during an exercise being carried out in front of the Barnsley Town Hall, when the Turntable Ladder he was being rescued on from the building collapsed.
Tragically, his wife was in the crowd of spectators watching the exercise. |

Harold Parkinson, age 42
Fireman - Sheffield Division, National Fire Service
Harold a former Power Station Boiler Firer from 119 Neill Road, Sheffield, where he lived with his wife Nettie. He was injured at a fire in Sheffield on 29th December 1942.
He died on 11th August 1943 at a Sheffield Hospital from smoke inhalation. |

Enoch Leadbetter , age 37
Leading Fireman - Rotherham Division, National Fire Service
Enoch a former Collier from 39 Main Street, Aston cum Aughton, where he lived with his wife Elizabeth, and his four children. On 24th October 1943, he was sheltering from the cold in a pump towing car whilst taking part a water relay from the County Dyke at Norwood to Highmoor Colliery, when he died from carbon monoxide poisoning. |

Leonard Harrison, age 31
Leading Fireman - Sheffield Division, National Fire Service
Leonard a former Printer's Compositor from 131 Club Garden Road, Sheffield, where he lived with his wife Florence and their two girls, aged six years and six months.
He died in a minefield while serving at Cullercoats near Newcastle.
On 13th April 1944. Leonard and his crew were called to a moorland fire where one of them stood on a mine which killed the entire crew. The moorland had previously been used as an ammunition dump and unknown to Leonard and his crew the area was still mined. |

Harold Gannon, age 42

Harold of 39 Moss Street Sheffield where he lived with his wife Hilda, died when the fire appliance he was on crashed on Hastilar Road/Prince of Wales Road, Sheffield whilst proceeding to a fire on 25th April 1944. |

Joseph Pardon, age 40
Fireman - Sheffield Division, National Fire Service
A former Silver Finisher and Electro-Plater from 6 Lister Crescent, Sheffield, where he lived with his wife Mary. He was injured when the fire appliance he was on crashed on Hastilar Road/Prince of Wales Road, Sheffield whilst proceeding to a fire on 25th April 1944.
He died from his injuries on 26th April 1944 at Sheffield Royal Hospital. |

Malcolm Rawnsley, age 41
Fireman - Sheffield Division, National Fire Service
A former Grocer's Shop Assistant from 1 Dawlish Terrace, Leeds, where he lived with his wife Gladys and their son Jeffery. He was injured on November 28th, 1944, at Rockingham Street, Sheffield, and died in hospital on 2nd January 1945. |

Colin Hill, age 39
Fireman - Sheffield Fire Brigade
Colin lived at 125 Vincent Road, Sheffield with his wife Dorothy and their two-year-old son. He died on June 5th, 1950, during the rescue of a cat from a tree, at the rear of 88 Albert Road, Sheffield. |

Dennis Thompson, age 22
Recruit Fireman - Rotherham County Borough Fire Brigade
Died on 28 February 1956, at Fire Training School - Gipton, Leeds, from injuries sustained following a fall during hook ladder drill after stepping on to an asbestos roof.
Dennis was on his eighth and final week of the recruit training course run by Leeds Fire Brigade. |

Fireman - Rotherham County Borough Fire Brigade
Seriously injured on 12 June 1958 in appliance road traffic accident on Doncaster Road, Rotherham, whilst responding to fire call at Silverwood Colliery.
Died 3 August 1958 at Doncaster Gate Hospital, Rotherham |

Bernard Ward, age 32
Fireman - West Riding County Fire Service, Brampton Bierlow Fire Station
Seriously injured on 11 May 1965 when he fell from an appliance at Wombwell, Brampton when the appliance hit a wall en route to an incident. Died in a Sheffield Hospital on 14th May 1965. |

Frank Mallinson, age 28
Fireman - Sheffield Fire Brigade
Frank lived at Oldfield Avenue, Stannington, Sheffield with his wife and two children. He was seriously injured in an explosion and fire at the Little Mermaid Cafe', Norfolk Street, Sheffield, 7th August, 1968.
He died of his burns and other injuries on 15th August in the Royal Hospital, Sheffield. |

Ronald Brewer, age 40
Leading Fireman - Doncaster Fire Brigade
Died 25 March 1969, due to injuries sustained in appliance road traffic accident whilst responding to a fire call, when he was thrown from, and run over by the fire service water tender in which he was travelling in Carr House Road, Doncaster, after the vehicle had swerved to avoid a motor car and thereafter collided with a lamp standard and a wall.
Ronald was trapped under the tender when he lost his life and, contrary to previous information, was not run over by another vehicle.

Robert Smith, age 47
Sub Officer - Sheffield Fire Brigade
Robert lived at Cartmell Road, Woodseats. He was seriously injured on 25th February 1974 in an explosion at the British Steel Corporation, Shepcote Lane, Sheffield, when molten metal came in contact with firefighting water.
He died of his burns on 28th February 1974 in the Northern General Hospital Sheffield.
He served in the Sheffield Fire Brigade for 23 years. He left a wife and a son, Christopher, aged nine. |

Paul Parkin, age 27
Fireman - Sheffield Fire Brigade
Paul lived at Bramley Drive, Handsworth with his wife Barbara and their two daughters, 5 year-old Marie, and 3 year-old Suzanne.
Paul was seriously injured on 25th February 1974 in an explosion at the British Steel Corporation, Shepcote Lane, Sheffield, when molten metal came in contact with firefighting water.
He died of his burns on 10th March 1974 in the Northern General Hospital Sheffield. At the time of his death Barbara was 3-months
pregnant with their 3rd child Mark, who was born in September 1974. |

Paul Crookes, age 38
Fireman - South Yorkshire County Fire Service
10 June 1977 Collapsed & died of a cardiac arrest during training drill at Mosborough Fire Station. |

Michael Clive Mee, George Medal, age 48
Station Officer - South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue
Suffered cardiac arrest on 28 December 1995 whilst attempting a rescue of drowning girl from a frozen lake at Hemsworth Water Park, West Yorkshire, whilst off duty.
He died on the same day at Pontefract Hospital.
Posthumously awarded the George Medal. |

David Jackson, age 48
Leading Firefighter - South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue
Suffered a cardiac arrest on 24 May 1996 during Breathing Apparatus Training at the Eastwood Training Facility.
He died of a 2nd cardiac arrest on the same day whilst in hospital. |
